Varsopolis Rally – Tradition of street racing in Warsaw
16 July 2018
The development of motoring in Poland has never been an easy, straightforward subject. Referring to automotive traditions, all the more so in Warsaw before the war. We were inspired both by the Lviv street race called Leopolis Grand Prix and by the pre-war tradition of automobilism in Warsaw, where parades, elegance contests and even street races took place regularly. Referring to all these events, together with the involvement of the Mont Blanc brand, Varsopolis was created – a tourist rally through Warsaw, whose start and finish took place in the Royal Baths Park on June 24, 2018. What’s more, the parade ride of vehicles before the rally took place inside the gardens of the Lazienki Park, the first time since the post-war era that cars were allowed into this area.

It was a very exciting event, bearing in mind the weather, which unfortunately did not cooperate on that June weekend. The owners struggled not only with the rally tasks but also with the monsoon rain.

In spite of such unfortunate weather conditions, smiles were present and the combination of cars was really unique. Our star was the Porsche 912 in Polo Red, and statically we exhibited the Ferrari 308 GTS. Interestingly, the rally organizers kept the age limit of the cars to 1975, which also meant that the Ferrari could not participate in the rally – its production date was 1978.

The range of cars present was very interesting, from a pre-war BMW Dixie to beautiful Jaguar E-Type and interesting pre- and post-war Mercedes. Even more interesting was the fact that these cars rarely hit the streets in the rain. The MG TC of our friend Michael Moran, which won one of the main prizes in the rally, was certainly an eye-catcher.

We hope that this event will enter permanently into the calendar of classic motoring in Poland.
